What’s Up With That # ?? (Twitter 101)

So maybe you’re on Facebook, and you kinda’ have that down – but every now and then you see a friend who has #Justsayin’ or #FB or #Padres.  WHAT IS  UP WITH THE # ???

It’s all about Twitter.

In order to really understand Twitter – you have to use an app. I like Hootsuite – but Seesmic and TweetDeck are also great choices.

Because Twitter only gives you a FEW characters to use (140 to be exact),  everybody abbreviates EVERYTHING… so if you are searching for a topic to see what other people are saying about it, you use the # sign.

Okay- so I just went online to get an example of  a search that I figured most of us in the Real Estate Industry would be interested in… NOT KNOWING the punch line!

#NAR

So… if you want to know what people on TWITTER are saying about the NAR revisions, you would put in #NAR. (here’s some back ground info).

Other typical #’s, abbreviations and Twitter Tips

#FF this is for Follow Friday. The idea is to let other people know who you think is interesting, and who they should follow!  So a recent #FF of mine looked like this:  #FF @TheRealClint, @OutdoorLori – making a come back (because they’d both been sick).

Proper Twitter Etiquette – when someone mentions you, it is polite to recognize them.  You can reply and thank them – or RETWEET it.

Retweeting looks like this:

RT @ribeezie: 13 Must Have WordPress Plugins - http://su.pr/3g0smV What other plugins would you add to the list? (Flash Video Player?)

In essence – I “rePeated” what @ribeezie was saying, and then I added a note that maybe a Flash Video Player plugin might be a good plugin to have.

Again, since you have very few characters on Twitter to use to get your message across, always shrink your URL using the app, or Bitly or Ow.ly (there are actually a ton of URL shortners out there).

Another Tip! Even if you are using an app to view Twitter – you should brand your Twitter Background

I’m sure you have other questions about Twitter!  Let me know what they are and I’ll try and answer them for you!
